Recommended Materials - Method Books and Technique:
These method books, co-authored by Parkening and David Brandon, are excellent and well thought-out, with helpful photos and illustrations. Volume one is beginning to advanced beginning, and volume two is intermediate. Volume two is especially good, with repertoire arranged by style period, notes on technique and interpretation for each piece, and the best blurb on fingernail care I have read.
Great pair of books by Robert Benedict. Daily sight-reading material with emphasis on phrasing, form, etc. Intelligently graded and highly recommended for all students.
The great Andres Segovia's fingerings of 12 Major and 12 Melodic Minor Scales. The study of scales is essential to a proper and well-rounded guitar technique.
Recommended Materials - Studies/Etudes/Estudios:
Collection of the great guitar composer Fernando Sor's most effective and beautiful etudes edited by Andres Segovia. Comes with an excellent CD including all 20 etudes recorded by Paul Henry. I personally like these very musical interpretations a lot.
Reprinting of the definitive Chanterelle publication by Mel Bay. Includes historical information, both original and modern fingering, and further performance suggestions.
Giuliani's masterful set of 120 studies for the right hand. A must own.
Recommended Materials - Repertoire:
These 4 volumes comprise the Frederick Noad Guitar Anthology. Fully fingered and exceptionally laid out, each volume also provides a wealth of historical background. Each volume is graded with the easiest material at the beginning of the book and the most difficult at the end. The Renaissance and Classical volumes are particularly great.
